Raju Estate, nestled in the misty hills of Coorg in Madikeri, is a haven for coffee. In 2024, under Mr. Raju’s careful stewardship, the estate has perfected a time-honored method—the two-tier shade system.

This distinctive approach to coffee cultivation sets Raju Estate apart. Tall silver oaks form the upper canopy, their leaves filtering sunlight into a soft glow. Below, shorter trees—jackfruit, pepper, and banana—create a microclimate where coffee plants thrive. This layered canopy fosters an ecosystem where birds and insects contribute to the coffee’s flourishing.

At 950 to 1,100 meters above sea level, the coffee cherries ripen slowly, absorbing the richness of their surroundings. This year, Mr. Raju has chosen the natural processing method, enhancing the cherries’ inherent sweetness and complexity. The result is a coffee with sweet aromatics, berry flavors, and a full, satisfying body.

As the beans dry on raised beds, the essence of the estate infuses them. The final product, with an SCA score of 83, reflects the vivid, rich, and balanced landscape it comes from.
